Geno SmithGeno Smith, like all quarterbacks, watches plenty of game film when preparing for Sundays.

But on Saturday night in San Diego, the New York Jets quarterback was watching a different kind of film when he missed his team’s meeting prior to their game.

During a conference call with reporters Monday, Smith admitted he was watching a movie during the meeting and claimed the time zone difference screwed him up.

“Mainly I just counted down instead of counting up and got the times mixed up,” Smith said, via ESPN New York. “So I guess you could say I was thinking I was on West Coast time, I mean thinking we were on East Coast time when we were actually on West Coast time.”

Whatever that means.

Smith realized he was late while watching the movie, and he went outside to call a teammate about what time meetings were. He then rushed to the team hotel and made it to the meeting just as it was ending.

“Felt really bad about it, ended up apologizing,” Smith said. “…Felt like I let a lot of people down, that’s definitely not in my character.”

Losing 31-0 on Sunday to the San Diego Chargers and getting benched in favor of Michael Vick didn’t help Smith’s cause.

Smith now has gotten into minor off-field controversies for two straight weeks. Last week, he was fined $12,000 for yelling expletives at the crowd at MetLife Stadium.
