Red Sox Positional Outlooks: Breaking Down Boston’s Roster Situation

John FarrellThe Boston Red Sox’s roster might as well have an “under construction” sign attached to it.

While some positions appear set for 2015, other areas still need to be sorted out. The roster currently in place could look drastically different than the one the Red Sox open the season with come April.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington recently revealed his offseason wish list, saying he’d like to add to the starting rotation and bullpen while also landing a left-handed bat. Boston finished 2014 with a 71-91 record, so changes are both necessary and inevitable. Two last-place finishes in three years simply won’t cut it, even though they were separated by a World Series title.

The Red Sox are in an enviable position, though. They have money to spend and assets to deal, meaning the club can be active in both free agency and the trade market this winter. The ball is in Boston’s court, and it would be surprising if Cherington didn’t get a little creative while seeking to retool for 2015.

Boston also has talent in place. It obviously was a rough season for the hometown squad, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future.

NESN.com Red Sox beat writer Ricky Doyle broke down each position as Boston prepares for an interesting offseason. Some situations certainly are clearer than others.
