Joel AnthonyThe Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons reportedly are eyeing a swap.

A league source told ESPN.com’s Chris Forsberg that the Celtics are working to finalize a trade that will send center Joel Anthony to the Detroit Pistons for point guard Will Bynum.

The Celtics appear to be making the move with roster flexibility in mind, Forsberg reported. Anthony is set to make $3.8 million this season, while Bynum is set to make $2.9 million, meaning the trade would save the Celtics $900,000.

There’s no telling, of course, if Bynum would find a role with the Celtics, who currently have 16 guaranteed contracts on the books for the 2014-15 season. Boston must reduce the number to 15 before the start of the regular season, and Bynum ultimately could be waived since the Celtics are deep at guard.

The C’s acquired Anthony from the Miami Heat in January. The 32-year-old averaged just 7.1 minutes per game in 21 contests with Boston last season.

Bynum averaged 8.7 points and 3.9 assists in 18.8 minutes per game in 56 games with Detroit last season.

UPDATE (10:47 a.m.): CSNNE’s A. Sherrod Blakely spoke to Bynum’s agent, who said the guard would “keep an open mind” about coming to Boston.

UPDATE (1:02 p.m.): The Celtics confirmed the trade is complete.
