In one of the more bizarre sports stories in recent memory, it appears former MLB slugger Jose Canseco has shot the middle finger off his hand.
Canseco’s fiancée, Leila Knight, told TMZ Sports on Tuesday night that the 50-year-old was cleaning his gun at his home in Las Vegas when the gun discharged, blowing the middle finger off his left hand. Knight said Canseco didn’t know the gun was loaded.
According a report from Las Vegas news affiliate KNTV, Canseco immediately was transported to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas to undergo surgery. Doctors reportedly told Canseco that he’d never have full use of his finger again, as the bullet ripped through the bottom half of the finger.
Canseco last made headlines in July when he sent out a series of tweets apologizing to former teammate Mark McGwire after McGwire said he was “done” with Canseco.
