Australian cricketer Phil Hughes is in critical condition after he was hit in the head with a ball during a match Tuesday at Sydney Cricket Ground.

The 25-year-old was batting when a bouncer came up and struck him in the head. Hughes didn’t immediately go to the ground but ended up collapsing just moments after being struck with the ball.

“For a few moments he stood, bent over head down and reeling from the blow before collapsing, face first, onto the pitch — a second hefty blow to the head in itself,” ESPN’s Daniel Brettig reported via The Guardian. “Team medical staff were quickly out onto the field, where Hughes was tended to before a motorised stretcher carried him, still motionless, from the ground.”

Hughes was carted off the field and rushed to the hospital, according to the BBC. Hughes went into surgery and was put in an induced coma.

Officials hope to know more about Hughes’ condition Wednesday.
