Joe MaddonJoe Maddon has a lot of people to please as the new manager of the Chicago Cubs.

Not only does he have to try to bring a World Series to an extremely hungry fanbase, he also has to deal with media pressure from a major market for the first time in his managerial career.

So what did he do to get on the good side of those who will be writing about him for the next five years?

He bought them a shot and a beer after his introductory press conference.

Smart move, Joe.

If the Cubs get off to a terrible start — and they very well could, because they’re in a tough division with a poor roster — perhaps the beat writers will think twice about writing negatively about a man who bought them drinks.

Somewhere, Bobby Valentine is kicking himself for not thinking of that idea during his tenure with the Boston Red Sox.
