The Jon Lester saga appears to be culminating with a two-horse race.

Lester called the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night to inform them he will be signing elsewhere in free agency, according to Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans. The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are believed to be the two finalists for Lester’s services.

Evans said earlier in the day he believed the Red Sox and Cubs were the front-runners for Lester because of their existing relationships with the pitcher.

Lester, of course, spent eight-plus seasons in Boston before being traded to the Oakland Athletics at this year’s Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline. He also has a relationship with Cubs front office executives Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod, all of whom spent time in the Red Sox organization during Lester’s tenure.
