The Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals worked overtime Tuesday night — and then some.
The Panthers and Caps set an NHL record for the longest shootout in league history, as the two teams endured a 20-round, 11-goal skills competition to settle things. Florida eventually came away with the extra point when forward Nick Bjugstad scored the game-winnner — on his second attempt of the shootout.
In all, the shootout, which lasted about 18 minutes, saw 11 combined goals from the two teams. Perhaps none was better than this gem from Florida’s Jussi Jokinen.
The Capitals went first in the shootout, which means they were able to put the pressure on with every goal they scored in the later rounds. However, on five different occasions the Panthers answered a Washington goal with one of their own.
