Report: David Ross Drawing Interest From Red Sox, Cubs, Braves, Others

David Ross’ market is starting to develop.

The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres are among the teams pursuing Ross, sources told FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. Other teams also reportedly are involved in the catcher’s free agency.

Ross, who will turn 38 in March, is among baseball’s most respected players. He drew rave reviews from the Red Sox’s coaching staff over the last two seasons, with manager John Farrell even saying on occasion that having the veteran backstop was like having an additional coach.

Ross’ on-field skills have diminished a bit. He hit .184 with seven homers, 15 RBIs and a .260 on-base percentage in 50 games with Boston in 2014. The 13-year veteran brings leadership qualities to the table, though, and his defensive work has been lauded by several pitchers, including fellow free agent Jon Lester.

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal even suggested Ross could accompany Lester as part of a package deal if the left-hander lands with a team also seeking a backup catcher. The Red Sox, Cubs and Braves certainly would fit that bill.
