Report: Ex-Red Sox Jonny Gomes Draws Interest From Rangers, Mariners

Jonny Gomes could soon find a new home.

The Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners have checked in on Gomes, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick. The Chicago Cubs, who have been linked to Gomes in the past, also reportedly inquired about the free-agent outfielder.

Gomes’ market has been taking shape for a few weeks. WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reported last month that the veteran outfielder had drawn interest from five teams, including the Cubs. ESPN.com’s Jesse Rogers reported in October that Chicago values Gomes’ leadership qualities and playoff experience.

Gomes, who was a key member of the Boston Red Sox’s 2013 World Series-winning squad, was traded to the Oakland Athletics at this year’s Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline. He hit .234 with six homers, 37 RBIs and a .327 on-base percentage in 112 games split between Boston and Oakland in 2014.

It’s possible Gomes will hold out for whichever team presents the best opportunity. The 34-year-old is best-equipped for a platoon role at this point, as he has shown power and the ability to hit left-handed pitching throughout his 12-year career.

Gomes already has played for five teams — Athletics, Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays — since breaking into the majors in 2003.
