A celebration turned scary real quick for a youth football coach in Union City, Ga.
Jonathan Magwood, head coach of the 10-and-under Union City Eagles, was paralyzed after a freak accident at his team’s end of the year banquet Nov. 30. The 28-year-old jumped into a foam pit and suffered two broken vertebrae, according to Jeremy Campbell of USA Today.
Magwood was immediately airlifted to the Atlanta Medical Center. The coach underwent surgery Wednesday and has a breathing tube in his throat, Campbell reports. But he isn’t alone in his recovery.
Magwood’s close friend, Dwayne Eberhart, has organized a fundraiser for him to help pay for his medical expenses, as well as ramps that will need to be installed at his home.
“He’s done so much for everyone in the community,” Eberhart said, according to USA Today. “Now is the time for us to do something for him.”
