Teammates fighting at practice certainly doesn’t look good at this point in the Boston Bruins’ season, but the two culprits assured it was no reason for fans to be concerned.
Winger Brad Marchand and defenseman Torey Krug got into a scuffle at practice Tuesday after battling for a puck in front of the net. It was serious enough that Tuukka Rask and Reilly Smith had to separate the two, per ESPN’s Joe McDonald.
Both Bruins combatants said the argument originated from Marchand telling a friend of Krug’s that he was taller than the defenseman, which angered him. But luckily, it wasn’t serious enough that there are any hard feelings between Marchand and Krug.
Krug even wondered if the fight could provide a spark to the struggling B’s, who are 19-15-3 and one point out of a playoff spot halfway through the season.
“Just competing in practice,” Krug told ESPNBoston.com. “Tempers flare a little bit. Nothing crazy, but obviously you saw afterward we were fine with each other. Who knows, maybe this is what our team needs a little bit.”
Krug added that the fight actually seemed to lighten the mood.
“It’s no secret in here that guys are not happy with where we’re at,” Krug said. “It’s got to start somewhere, so why not in practice? I thought after that you noticed the guys were a little more intense and having some fun. Who knows, maybe it could be good for our team. Maybe we can use that tomorrow (against the Pittsburgh Penguins).”
