The Boston Bruins recalled top goaltending prospect Malcolm Subban on Friday and sent backup goaltender Niklas Svedberg to Providence (AHL) on a conditioning loan.
The B’s play Saturday night at TD Garden against the Los Angeles Kings, then have three days off before a Wednesday night road game against the New York Rangers. After that, Boston doesn’t play again until Saturday, Feb. 7.
B’s starter Tuukka Rask has played at a Vezina Trophy-caliber level in January with a 6-1-3 record and a .947 save percentage. There’s no reason to sit Rask in the upcoming games against the Kings and Rangers, so it does make sense to give Svedberg a chance to play in the AHL for a bit. Svedberg has made one start since Dec. 27.
Subban is 9-10-2 with a .921 save percentage for Providence this season and was named AHL Player of the Week last week. Subban has never appeared in an NHL regular-season game.
