The debate over whether LeBron James is a better player than Michael Jordan will always exist, but for one of the greatest NBA players of all time, it’s not even a question.

Former Houston Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon told CNBC on Thursday that it’s always been MJ, and it always will be.

“When people start comparing (James) with Jordan, then that’s not a fair comparison,” Olajuwon said. “Jordan was a far more superior player in a very tough league, he was very creative.”

“That’s not taking away anything from LeBron because he is a great player, but it is not a fair comparison because Jordan is a far superior player.”

Olajuwon’s sentiments feel especially relevant this season with James’ Cleveland Cavaliers struggling at 19-20 through Thursday night. James’ future with the Cavs is uncertain, and there’s no knowing where his career will go from here. Though his individual achievements could keep growing to MJ-like heights, his two NBA championships might never catch up with Jordan’s six.
