We’ve seen plenty of ill-timed social media posts over the years. But this one might be near the top of the list.

The NFL on Monday confirmed that it was investigating the New England Patriots for allegedly using deflated footballs during their AFC Championship Game win over the Indianapolis Colts.

On Tuesday, the league decided to post the following photo to its Instagram account.

Yeah, not the best time for that one.

We understand that everyone is excited for Patriots-Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX, but perhaps the league could have held off on posting a picture of deflated footballs before it finished its own investigation of deflated footballs.

Then again, maybe the NFL uploaded this photo to show everyone just how one of its teams allegedly ruined the integrity of the league by cheating in one of the biggest games of the season.

To make matters worse, ESPN’s Chris Mortenson reported late Tuesday night that the NFL found that 11 of the 12 balls used by the Patriots against the Colts were under-inflated.

Nice, NFL. Nice.
