Ohio State really wants its students to value athletics over academics this week.
The Buckeyes punched their ticket to the first College Football Playoff National Championship by knocking off top-seeded Alabama, but the university isn’t viewing the huge game as a free ticket for kids to ditch class. Ohio State will take on the Oregon Ducks in Arlington, Texas, on Monday, Jan. 12, which also happens to be the first day of spring semester.
That’s bad news for Ohio State students who really want to keep that perfect attendance streak alive. The school’s administration sent an email to students this week, saying it’s up to the professors to determine whether or not traveling to Texas will count as an excused absence to miss class Monday or Tuesday. But if students don’t clear it with professors, they run the risk of being taken off the class roster.

That’s rough. Celebrating a possible national title might rank above sitting inside a lecture hall and going over a syllabus. But just barely.
It likely won’t deter all OSU students from taking the trip to cheer on their team — especially if they subscribe to the same school of thought as quarterback Cardale Jones when it comes to classes and football.
