Pedro Martinez In Hall With Red Sox Or Expos Hat: Is It Even A Question?

At least we can rule out the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

Pedro Martinez, who pitched for five teams throughout his 18-year career, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday. ESPN’s Buster Olney thus raised the question of whether the three-time Cy Young will don a Boston Red Sox hat or a Montreal Expos hat on his Hall of Fame plaque.

Stop it.

Olney’s stance seems pretty clear. The lingering “so …” at the end of his tweet suggests he, like everyone else, expects Martinez to don a Sox cap in Cooperstown.

Just so we’re all on the same page, however, let’s look at the numbers to stomp out any doubt.

With Expos: Four seasons, 118 games (117 starts), 55-33 (.625), 3.06 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 139 ERA+, 3.40 K/BB, two All-Star selections, one Cy Young Award.

With Red Sox: Seven seasons, 203 games (201 starts), 117-37 (.760), 2.52 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 190 ERA+, 5.45 K/BB, four All-Star selections, two Cy Young Awards, one World Series title.

So, uh, yeah. Case closed.

Pedro’s going to look really nice in that Red Sox cap, just as he did for the late 1999s and early 2000s.
