FOXBORO, Mass. — Rob Gronkowski’s remarkable return from a torn ACL earned him some hardware Friday.

The New England Patriots tight end was elected the Pro Football Writers of America Comeback Player of the Year after catching 82 passes for 1,124 yards with 12 touchdowns in 15 games this season. Gronkowski injured his knee Dec. 8, 2013, had surgery one month later and was back on the field for Week 1 of the 2014 season.

Gronkowski missed the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 with a broken forearm, so this is his first healthy season since 2011. He led NFL tight ends in yards and touchdowns this season while being named a first-team All-Pro and selected to the Pro Bowl.

Gronkowski had an ankle injury during the 2011 playoffs, so this is the first time the Patriots have had him healthy for the postseason since 2010, his rookie year.
