Stephen Curry’s Mom Imposes Fines On Warriors Guard For Turnovers

Every player in the NBA answers to commissioner Adam Silver. But Stephen Curry also has to answer to his momma.

The Golden State Warriors guard has been pretty spectacular this season, but if there’s one weakness in his game, it’s turnovers, as Curry has a history of giving the ball away.

Curry’s harshest critic might be his mother, Sonya, and apparently she has taken matters into her own hands to limit her son’s giveaways.

“Sonya came up with the idea of fining her son a few seasons ago, frustrated at watching him lose the ball too many times in one game,” Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote in a recent article. “She checked with her husband, former NBA guard Dell, on what would be a reasonable number of turnovers to hold Stephen to per game; they settled on three. Anything more than that, he owes his mother: $100 per giveaway. Anything under is subtracted from his total.”

That’s one way to do it.

What’s better, Curry confirmed that the fine is very real and that he actually thinks about it on the court.

“Oh yeah, in games, I’ve thought about it,” Curry told the Chronicle. “When I get to two I think, ‘Dang, I can’t have any more.’ If I get four it’s frustrating even more than just playing the game.”

Curry’s mother certainly cashed in last season, as her son committed 294 turnovers, second-most in the NBA behind John Wall’s 295. Yet all of that money doesn’t go straight in Sonya’s pocket. Instead, she makes her son by her some fashion items with the fines he’s piled up.

Curry’s turnover numbers are down this year, so it appears that for now, momma knows best.
