2015 MLB Draft Order Set: Boston Red Sox Face Huge Gap Between Picks

Feb 10, 2015

The 2015 Major League Baseball draft order is set now that James Shields reportedly has signed with the San Diego Padres.

Shields was one of 12 players who received and rejected a one-year qualifying offer at the beginning of the offseason. The right-hander was the final such player to agree to a new contract, meaning his reported deal with San Diego ends any changes that could occur to the draft order by virtue of compensation-attached free agents.

The Padres will relinquish their first-round pick (13th overall) by signing Shields. San Diego’s first-round pick was unprotected because the club did not have one of the 10 worst records in baseball in 2014.

The Boston Red Sox will select seventh overall for the second time in three years. They selected left-hander Trey Ball with the No. 7 pick in the 2013 draft after a disappointing 2012 season.

The Red Sox won’t pick again until No. 81 overall because they signed Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez — two players who rejected qualifying offers — in free agency this offseason and thus surrendered draft picks.

The Red Sox are projected to have a $6,480,889 total draft pool, according to Baseball America.
