Hanley Ramirez, Robbie Ross Jr. Get Fit For Spring Training With Boxing, Yoga

For a few Boston Red Sox newcomers, regular old weight training and cardio just won’t cut it.

With their first full workout scheduled for Feb. 25, Red Sox players have been arriving at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla., in cycles to get in some early workouts before the real thing begins. And as WEEI’s Rob Bradford found out, not all of them are getting back into shape through the conventional means.

Bradford said outfielder Hanley Ramirez — who came to Boston as a free agent in November — immediately put on some boxing gloves and threw some punches on a bag set up outside of the batting cages. The team apparently installed it specifically for his routine.

But Ramirez isn’t the only one who prefers a different routine. Pitcher Robbie Ross Jr. found out he was being traded from the Texas Rangers to the Red Sox while he was at a yoga class.

“I was actually going into yoga,” Ross told Bradford. “I was literally walking into yoga. We had just gone into do one of the poses to get loose, and then, boom, it was (Rangers general manager) Jon Daniels on the phone. It was with me and my stuff was just sitting there. So I went over and grabbed it.”

But no matter what method the Sox prefer to get in shape, the important detail is that they’re showing up early and getting right to work. There’s a whole week before the entire team is expected to be in the Sunshine State, and from the looks of it, there’s already a good turnout.
