Adam Lallana appeared to leave his shooting cleats at home.

Lallana missed the easiest of scoring chances in the second half of Liverpool’s UEFA Europa League round of 32 game Thursday.

A mix-up between Besiktas goalkeeper Cenk Gonen and defender Pedro Franco gifted Lallana an opportunity to score in the 49th minute, but the Liverpool midfielder inexplicably shot over the crossbar from just six yards out.

Many believed Lallana is nearing his best form, given his performances in the Reds’ last two games. He set up Mario Balotelli’s game-winning goal in Liverpool’s Feb. 10 victory over Tottenham and scored the winner himself in the Reds’ triumph over Crystal Palace four days later.

Lallana has scored five goals and assisted on four more in his first 28 games as a Liverpool player, but his miss against Besiktas made him the butt of many an Internet joke.
