Oilers Outlast Bruins In 12-Round Shootout, Longest In B’s History (Video)

The last time the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers played this long into the night, there was a little bit more at stake.

It wasn’t quite the triple-overtime battle of the 1990 Stanley Cup Final, but the B’s and Oilers played a marathon contest Wednesday night in Edmonton. Sixty minutes of regulation couldn’t settle things, nor could an extra five minutes of overtime. Not even 11 1/2 shootout rounds did the trick.

Instead, it took a 12th-round shootout goal from Martin Marincin (who?) — the only goal scored by either team — for Edmonton to hand Boston its fifth straight loss. Marincin, just called up from the AHL earlier in the week, didn’t even pull off some sort of fancy move for the game-winner. He appeared to mishandle the puck, leading to a goal between the legs of Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask.

The 12-round shootout was the longest in Bruins history, outlasting a nine-round affair in the 2006-07 season.

“Was it?” Rask asked, according to The Boston Globe, when told the shootout set a new Bruins record.

“Would have been nice to win it,” he continued. “But I’d seen enough, so I decided to end it.”

The five-game losing streak is the Bruins’ longest skid since Feb. 2010 and the defeat in Edmonton was their first loss in Edmonton since 2000.
