Point guard Isaiah Thomas never was a buyout candidate, but forward Luigi Datome, whom the team acquired Thursday from the Detroit Pistons in the Tayshaun Prince trade, was, according to the Herald’s Steve Bulpett.

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge discussed Datome and the other prize from the Prince deal, Swedish forward Jonas Jerebko, in a Q&A with The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

“We wanted to see how (Datome and Jerebko) fit with us,” Ainge said. “They’re players we’ve liked before that we watched play and develop, and we want to see how they fit in our system. We want to see how they fit with our coaches and mesh with our players. Datome is a great shooter and Jerebko is a bigger perimeter player who can do a lot of the things Kelly (Olynyk) does.”

Jerebko averaged 5.2 points and 3.1 rebounds over 43 games for the Pistons this season. Datome was used only sparingly, logging 17 total minutes in three appearances.

Datome, who will become the first player in Celtics history to wear No. 70, wrote in a Facebook post that he’s “(o)bviously enthusiastic to start a new experience with the Celtics.”

Thomas, who came over from the Phoenix Suns in a separate trade Thursday, will wear No. 4, and Jerebko will sport No. 8.
