Report: Michael Sam Applies For NFL’s New Veteran Combine In March

Michael Sam is looking for another chance.

The defensive end made history a year ago Monday when he announced he was gay. Just a few months later, Sam became the first openly gay player drafted in the NFL when the St. Louis Rams took him in the seventh round.

It’s been an uphill struggle since then for Sam. He was cut by the Rams, and after signing with the Dallas Cowboys and being put on the practice squad, he was cut there, too.

Sam’s latest attempts to become the first openly gay man to play in an NFL game will come with help from the league. Sam has applied for the NFL’s new veteran combine, according to USA TODAY. The league will invite 100 or players to the showcase event in late March.

If that doesn’t net Sam an NFL job, he does have at least one other football option — a contract offer from the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, according to USA TODAY. Sam could try and use that offer as a springboard, with hopes of landing another spot in the NFL.
