If the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies never execute a trade involving Cole Hamels, it won’t be because the sides never explored the possibility.

The Red Sox and Phillies have at least discussed Hamels, according to multiple reports. It doesn’t sound like a deal is close, though, meaning Boston could begin the season with its current rotation.

The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo reported over the weekend, citing a major league source, that the Red Sox were one of four teams that made a “real” offer to the Phillies for Hamels. Cafardo added that, according to information from various sources, the Red Sox’s offer was heavy on the major league side, as the club reportedly is trying to avoid relinquishing any of its top prospects.

WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford reported Monday, citing a major league source, that the Red Sox aren’t remotely close on any sort of trade involving Hamels. However, the source told Bradford that the Red Sox have made the Phillies aware of the parameters of what they’d be willing to give up for the left-hander.

Hamels, who has four years and $96 million remaining on his contract, has been the subject of trade rumors for a while. The Red Sox long have been considered potential suitors, especially with Jon Lester now gone, but the Phillies’ asking price seems high.
