Bill Belichick Calls Patriots Free-Agent Signings ‘Productive’ But Offers Little Else

The way Bill Belichick talked about the New England Patriots’ additions this offseason, one might think the head coach briefly looked at a stat sheet and blindly offered them a contract.

Belichick called pass rusher Jabaal Sheard and tight end Scott Chandler “productive players” Tuesday at the NFL Annual Meeting, but he would only say “we’ll see how it goes” when asked how they might fit the Patriots’ scheme.

Belichick noted that he hasn’t seen cornerback Bradley Fletcher or running back Travaris Cadet in the Patriots’ system, so similar to any roster addition, there are a lot of unknowns that come in free agency.

Belichick expects competition at cornerback throughout the preseason with starters Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner gone, but he also noted there’s “competition at every position every year. No different this year.”

The only nugget Belichick offered on the new players was that the Patriots had trouble defending Chandler while the 6-foot-7 tight end was with the Buffalo Bills, but that’s been pretty well documented.

Perhaps we’ll have to find out how Belichick feels about his new additions after he sees them during OTAs and minicamp. Until then, he doesn’t have much to say.
