It sounds like the New England Patriots never stood a chance to retain Darrelle Revis.
The All-Pro cornerback said on a conference call with the media Wednesday night that it was a “no-brainer” to return to the New York Jets in free agency. Revis signed a five-year, $70 million contract with $39 million guaranteed Tuesday night.
According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick “politely declined further negotiation” when he was “apprised” of Revis’ talks with the Jets.
Revis explained why he chose to return to the Jets in an interview with the team’s website.
“I’m just so excited. I feel like this was my home before, and I’m just glad to be back home,” Revis said. “Just overwhelmed, all that I’ve been through, the ACL and just try to recover from that was real devastating for me. At the same time, man, I’m happy to be back home. Jets fans, I’m back home. I love you guys.
“My main goal is to win. That’s always been on my mind is to win ever since I got drafted in ’07. It’s exciting. It’s an exciting moment for New York Jets fans. I’m happy to be home.”
Revis has high hopes for the Jets’ defense, which features top-tier defensive linemen Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson. The Jets also hired new head coach Todd Bowles after the 2014 season concluded.
“We could make a lot of noise for the next couple years, man,” Revis said. “Sheldon, you have Muhammad, Calvin Pace, David Harris, we signed him back. We’re doing a lot of things to win. It’s pretty awesome. We got a new head coach. It’s pretty awesome. We’ll just make some noise, man. Make some noise on defense and make noise.”
