Dean Smith’s last kind gesture for his players came after death.

The former University of North Carolina basketball coach passed away in February, and in the wake of his death, his former players came out of the woodwork to praise him as a coach and mentor. Many shared stories about Smith’s kindness and goodwill, and we’re seeing one last example of his love for his players.

As part of his will, Smith apparently instructed that $200 be sent to each player he coached for nearly 40 years at Chapel Hill. The late coach also instructed that the check include the message “enjoy a dinner out compliments of “Coach Dean Smith,” and the notation reads “Dinner out.”

A photo of the letter sent to former Tar Heel player Dante Calabria circulated on the Internet on Thursday.
