Neither Steve Bruce nor Gus Poyet behaved as grown-ups in front of a global audience.

Bruce and Poyet nearly fought on the sideline during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw between hosts Hull City and Sunderland in the Premier League. Officials had to separate the two managers, who might have came to blows during the game between two, relegation-threatened teams.

The ugly incident took place moments after referee Mike Dean dismissed Poyet for dissent late into the first half. Poyet walked from his technical area to Bruce’s and said something that enraged the Hull City manager.

Bruce later expressed his regret for the altercation but wouldn’t reveal exactly what Poyet said to him.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to have done,” Bruce said, according to the Telegraph. “We all do stupid things and we’ll regret it in the morning, it was a couple of adults behaving like kids.

“What he has said stays between us, I only went to his assistant and said Jack Rodwell had dived. Gus should say what he said.

“I’m grateful to the linesman for stepping in. It was a big heavyweight versus a lightweight and he was exhausted after trying to keep hold of me.

“It’s up to Gus if he wants to reveal why I’ve gone on like some raging idiot then it’s up to him. I don’t think he will, but it wasn’t nice what he said. We’re more disappointed we haven’t won the game more than my antics. I don’t know why I reacted like that, it was silly.”

The Poyet-Bruce scuffle of 2015 is one of the most spectacular sideline clashes between managers the Premier League has produced in recent years.

The draw kept Hull City and Sunderland rooted in 15th and 16th place, respectively, in the Premier League standings with 10 games to play.
