Report: Dolphins Were Runners-Up For Jimmy Graham Trade Behind Seattle

The top two tight ends in the NFL reportedly came this close to playing in the same division.

The Miami Dolphins were aggressive in pursuing Jimmy Graham in free agency this season and finished second behind the Seattle Seahawks to trade for the former New Orleans Saints tight end, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport tweeted Tuesday. The Seahawks acquired Graham on March 10 in exchange for Pro Bowl center Max Unger.

The Dolphins, of course, didn’t dwell on missing out on Graham, nabbing former Cleveland Browns tight end Jordan Cameron in free agency two days later. Cameron is no slouch, having earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2013 before struggling with concussion and back issues in 2014. Yet he’s certainly not on the level of Graham, who paired with recently-signed defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh could have made for quite a scary combination in Miami.

Either way, the Dolphins came out with an upgrade at tight end, letting Charles Clay walk after a disappointing 2014 campaign. Clay then signed on with the Buffalo Bills, who had just allowed tight end Scott Chandler to team up with Rob Gronkowski on the New England Patriots.

It was quite the tight end shuffle AFC East this offseason, but the Patriots still remain on top.
