If All-Pro safety Devin McCourty returns to the New England Patriots next season, then it might be on a long-term deal.

The Patriots are more likely to assign the franchise tag to kicker Stephen Gostkowski than McCourty, “multiple sources involved in discussions with those involved” told ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss. Reiss noted that discussions are still fluid.

The cap figure for franchising a kicker is expected to be around $4.5 million, compared to nearly $9.5 million for a safety.

Gostkowski missed just two field goals last season and was perfect on extra points while earning second-team All-Pro honors. He hit 15 extra points and one field goal during the playoffs. The nine-year veteran is third all-time in field goal percentage.

McCourty began his career at cornerback and moved to safety full time in 2013. He had two interceptions and a forced fumble last season while rarely being targeted, covering the deep half of the field.

McCourty is considered the best safety available this offseason in free agency or the draft.
