2015 NFL Draft Live: Patriots Pick Malcom Brown To Wrap Up First Round

by

Apr 30, 2015

11:30 p.m.: The New England Patriots wrap up the first round by taking Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown at No. 32 overall.

We’ll see you right back here Friday night, folks. The Tennessee Titans are back on the clock.

11:24 p.m.: Clemson linebacker Stephone Anthony goes No. 31 to the New Orleans Saints, and we now come to the final pick of the first round. The New England Patriots are on the clock.

11:19 p.m.: The Green Bay Packers opt to bolster their secondary with the 29th pick, selecting Arizona State safety Damarious Randall. Randall is the first safety to come off the board.

11:15 p.m.: Hold the phone. It appears the Patriots will, in fact, have a pick tonight.

11:12 p.m.: The Indianapolis Colts snag a new target for Andrew Luck, selecting Miami wideout Phillip Dorsett with the 29th overall pick.

11:01 p.m.: The Patriots traded out of the first round, a source told The Boston Globe’s Shalize Manza Young.

10:56 p.m.The Dallas Cowboys grabbed a cornerback many Patriots fans wanted: UConn’s Byron Jones. Jones is one of the best athletes to ever enter the NFL. He has the world record with a 12-foot, 3-inch broad jump.

The Detroit Lions selected Duke guard Laken Tomlinson, another favorite for Patriots fans. He’s extremely intelligent and a solid athlete. He started at right guard for the Blue Devils.

10:54 p.m.The Baltimore Ravens grabbed UCF wide receiver Breshad Perriman with the 26th overall pick. He’s extremely fast but also very raw. He should be a nice replacement for Torrey Smith, who had similar skills.

10:47 p.m.The Panthers have to settle for Washington linebacker Shaq Thompson, who goes higher than some expected. Thompson is the third Huskies player taken in the first round.

Thompson is the best pass-coverage linebacker in the draft. He also played safety, running back and punt returner at Washington.

10:42 p.m.The Arizona Cardinals selected Florida offensive tackle D.J. Humphries. He was regarded by some as the top left tackle prospect in the draft.

The Panthers, who needed a left tackle, have to be bummed right now.

10:36 p.m.The Broncos aren’t taking an offensive lineman. They’re grabbing Missouri edge defender Shane Ray, who was cited for marijuana possession Monday. Weed is, of course, legal in Colorado.

The Broncos traded their 28th overall pick, the 143rd overall pick, a 2016 fifth-round pick and guard Manny Ramirez to the Lions for the 23rd overall pick.

The Arizona Cardinals are on the clock.

The Broncos now have Ray, Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware to get after the passer.

10:30 p.m.The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Kentucky edge defender Bud Dupree with the 22nd overall pick. He’s been compared to Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins because of his athleticism, versatility and rawness. The Steelers just keep adding linebackers.

The Lions traded the 23rd overall pick to the Denver Broncos, who could be moving up to take an offensive lineman. The Broncos are leapfrogging the Carolina Panthers, who also are likely to take an offensive lineman.

10:26 p.m.The Cincinnati Bengals grabbed Texas A&M offensive lineman Cedric Ogbuehi with the 21st overall pick. He tore his ACL in January, so he might not be ready to start the season for the Bengals.

10:19 p.m.The Philadelphia Eagles selected USC wide receiver Nelson Agholor with the 20th overall pick. Agholor is big enough and fast enough, and he’s an exceptional route runner. Very smart pick for the Eagles. Agholor would have been a great pick for the Patriots.

10:13 p.m.The Cleveland Browns selected Florida State offensive lineman Cameron Erving with the 19th overall pick. Erving started his college career at offensive tackle, then moved to center as a senior. The Browns took Washington nose tackle Danny Shelton at No. 12 overall.

10:06 p.m.Washington cornerback Marcus Peters, who was dismissed by the Huskies for fighting with coaches, goes No. 18 overall to the Kansas City Chiefs. Peters could wind up being the best cornerback in his draft class, but he also has some definite character red flags.

9:59 p.m.The 49ers selected Oregon defensive lineman Arik Armstead with the 17th overall pick. He replaces Ray McDonald at five-technique defensive end. Armstead was inconsistent in college, but he has Richard Seymour-like potential.

9:54 p.m.The Houston Texans selected Wake Forest cornerback Kevin Johnson, who received interest from the Patriots. Johnson needs to pack on some muscle, but he’s a very fundamentally sound defensive back.

The 49ers have made their pick, and the Kansas City Chiefs are on the board.

9:47 p.m.The Chargers traded up to grab Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon at No. 15 overall. Gordon ran for more than 2,500 yards last season and immediately boosts San Diego’s running back corps.

Amazingly, it took 15 picks for the first trade, and surprisingly, it was for a running back.

9:42 p.m.The Miami Dolphins get another steal by selecting Louisville wide receiver DeVante Parker 14th overall. The Dolphins needed a wideout despite trading for Kenny Stills this offseason.

Parker received interest from the Patriots during the pre-draft period. He’s big and athletic.

The 49ers traded the 15th overall pick to the San Diego Chargers. They gave up the 17th overall pick, plus a fourth-rounder and a 2016 fifth-round pick.

9:34 p.m.The New Orleans Saints selected Stanford offensive tackle Andrus Peat with the 13th overall pick. The Saints reportedly liked Vic Beasley, but he went early to the Falcons.

Peat was regarded by some as the best offensive tackle in the draft.

9:26 p.m.The Cleveland Browns grabbed Washington defensive tackle Danny Shelton with the 12th overall pick. Shelton is a massive nose tackle who also can do damage as a pass rusher. He’s been compared to Vince Wilfork for his athleticism and versatility.

Shelton bear-hugged Goodell and lifted him off the ground.

9:20 p.m.The Minnesota Vikings selected cornerback Trae Waynes with the 11th overall pick. Waynes was widely regarded as the top cornerback in the draft, though he had some issues with change of direction.

9:10 p.m.The St. Louis Rams just took Georgia running back Todd Gurley off the board with the 10th overall pick. Gurley is the first running back to go in the top 10 since Trent Richardson, who was a gigantic bust.

Gurley is coming off a torn ACL, so he’s a pretty big risk here.

9:06 p.m.The Giants took the second offensive lineman to come off the board. New York grabbed Miami offensive lineman Ereck Flowers. I had mocked Scherff to the Giants, so it makes sense that they grabbed Flowers, who can play guard or tackle.

9 p.m.Vic Beasley is off the board. The Falcons took the Clemson pass rusher eighth overall. There were reports that the New Orleans Saints wanted Beasley. The Falcons stole him from an NFC South rival.

8:53 p.m.The Bears grabbed West Virginia wideout Kevin White seventh overall. That pick makes a lot of sense after the Bears traded Brandon Marshall to the Jets.

White is big and speedy. Some analysts like him more than Cooper.

8:50 p.m.The Chicago Bears have made their pick. The Atlanta Falcons are on the clock.

8:47 p.m.The Jets took Leonard Williams sixth overall. Watch out, Tom Brady.

Williams was widely regarded as the best prospect in the draft. He’ll likely play five-technique defensive end in New York.

8:45 p.m.

The Jets made the pick. They didn’t trade out.

8:41 p.m.The New York Jets could get a steal here in Leonard Williams. That would give them three unbelievable five-technique defensive ends. Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson are two of the best in the NFL.

8:40 p.m.Washington selected Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff fifth overall. Scherff played left tackle with the Hawkeyes, but he projects to guard in the NFL.

Scherff is ultra-athletic and strong as an ox. This is a bit of a shocker.

8:34 p.m.The Oakland Raiders grabbed Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper with the fourth overall pick.

Cooper does his best work over the middle of the field, where quarterback Derek Carr thrives. Cooper has sure hands, and he’s the best route-runner in the draft. He’s also a great athlete.

8:27 p.m.The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Florida edge defender Dante Fowler Jr. third overall. Fowler is an extremely versatile player who lined up everywhere from defensive tackle to inside linebacker.

I’m 3-for-3 on my mock draft for anyone who cares, aka no one.

8:12 p.m.The Titans decided to make the pick, and as expected once again, they grabbed Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Mariota is not quite as pro-ready as Winston, but he’s a much better athlete, and he has better character.

Technically, the Titans could still trade Mariota, but that’s less likely now.

Oh, and Roger Goodell mispronounced Mariota as Marioto. Way to go, Rog.

8:12 p.m.As expected, the Buccaneers drafted Jameis Winston.

I still think it’s a risk to draft Winston, given his litany of off-field issues, but he’s the most pro-ready quarterback in the draft. The Titans are on the clock. The Eagles seem desperate to take Marcus Mariota, so we’ll see if the Titans decide to keep their pick or take the trade package.

8:10 p.m.The pick is in. No trade here.

8:05 p.m.The Bucs are on the clock. Draft time!

8:04 p.m.Breaking: Roger Goodell was booed. Rightfully.

7:58 p.m.NFL Media’s Jeff Darlington reported on NFL Network that the Bears offered Jay Cutler for the second overall pick.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that the Eagles offered two first-rounders, a third-rounder, defensive lineman Fletcher Cox, cornerback Brandon Boykin, linebacker Mychal Kendricks and more for the first or second overall pick.

Rapoport also reports that Sam Bradford was part of the offered deal.

7:50 p.m.We’re now 10 minutes away from the start of the NFL draft, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be on the clock. The Bucs are expected to select Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, but there are rumors of trades still swirling around.

The Tennessee Titans pick second, where Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is expected to be selected. The Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Chicago Bears are among teams rumored to be interested in trading up with the Titans.

7 p.m. ET: The 2015 NFL Draft is one hour away, but the New England Patriots won’t pick until around 11:30 p.m. — if they keep the 32nd overall pick.

The Patriots want to trade down, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday. The Patriots have completely traded out of the first round just twice under Bill Belichick. The best players in the draft class are likely to be gone by the time the Patriots are picking, and many draft analysts believe teams can get a similar talent between the 20th and 60th picks. Knowing that, finding a trade partner could be tough, unless a team wants to move up for a quarterback.

We’ll track all of the picks here, so keep it tuned to NESN.com for news and analysis live from Gillette Stadium.
