Marathon Monday is a special day in Massachusetts, and perhaps nobody knows that better than David Ortiz.

The Boston Red Sox go hand-in-hand with the Boston Marathon, as their annual Patriots’ Day game starts during the race around 11 a.m., the earliest game in Major League Baseball. And the connection between the two events became even stronger after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, when Ortiz brought the city together with an expletive-laden pregame speech in the Red Sox’s first home game following the tragedy.

So two years later, the designated hitter kept the relationship going by wishing the runners good luck before the Red Sox took the field.

Ortiz celebrated the holiday himself by driving in the first run of Boston’s game against the Baltimore Orioles with a sacrifice fly.
