There was a scary moment early Monday night in a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs.

In one of the unluckiest and most bizarre plays in a long time, a female fan was struck in the head with a foul ball in the second inning at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The unusual thing was, the woman was standing behind the net behind home plate.

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro lined an A.J. Burnett offering back toward the screen, where the woman stood with her back to the field in the first row. The ball hit what appeared to be a mesh net, suppposedly there to protect fans from foul balls and wild pitches. However, the mesh screen had some give and the lady was too close and ended up being struck in the back of the head.

The game was stopped and delayed 23 minutes as medical crews attended to the woman. She eventually was carried out on a stretcher and someone nearby gave a thumbs-up as she was carried off.

“She was placed on a stretcher, moved to a nearby ambulance and brought to the hospital for further treatment,” the Pirates said in a statement. “She was conscious and alert at the time of transport, graciously thanking her caregivers while giving a ’thumbs up’ gesture to nearby fans. Our thoughts and prayers are with her.”

Her condition is unknown at this time.
