Patriots’ 2015 NFL Draft Fits: Jay Ajayi Among Top Running Backs

It might be time for the New England Patriots to re-load at running back.

The Patriots planned ahead in 2011, when they doubled up at the position by selecting Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley in the NFL draft. Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis still were kicking around, but the Patriots knew they needed an injection of youth to plan for the future.

Both picks worked out great for the Patriots, but now Vereen has signed with the New York Giants and Ridley appears on his way out via free agency as well.

The Patriots have fine depth at running back, but LeGarrette Blount is in the final year of his contract and uncertainly swirls around reserves Jonas Gray and Tyler Gaffney. The Patriots could use 2015 as a trial run to find out if Gray or Gaffney has what it takes to start in 2016, but head coach Bill Belichick usually likes to plan ahead.

The 2015 NFL draft is loaded with running backs. The Patriots could look to draft another pass-catcher, as well, to add to third-down options James White and Travaris Cadet.
