Fenway Park received some upgrades this offseason, and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh paid a visit to show them off.
Walsh and the Boston Red Sox unveiled some improvements to the 103-year-old ballpark Monday, starting with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Gate K (for Kids). It was Walsh’s first preseason walkthrough at Fenway since becoming mayor in 2014.
Walsh explored the new Kids Concourse, where there’s a 6-foot-9 Wally the Green Monster bobblehead, an interactive video wall for fan photos and a children’s activity area. Fenway Park concessionaire, Aramark, also offered samples of the new $5 kids’ meals and other little treats like mini pigs in a blanket, corn dogs, fried Oreo mini churro bites and fried apples.
The club showed off 174 new seats at the park, too. The State Street Pavilion has 112 additional seats, the bleachers have 28 new seats and a 34-person party suite called the Infiniti Suite was added on the EMC Level.
Walsh and the Red Sox also announced a free open house on April 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. that will allow fans to wander Fenway Park and get autographs from Red Sox alumni. The event also will feature a showcase game between Florida A&M University and North Carolina Central University at 2 p.m.
