BOSTON — Brian Butterfield’s energy really is contagious. Just ask catcher Ryan Hanigan.

Butterfield, a well-respected third base coach and infield instructor for the Boston Red Sox, dished out quite the windmill Monday after Dustin Pedroia lined a ball into the left-field corner in the sixth inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park. Hanigan, clearly feeling the enthusiasm, raced all the way from first base to score, even circling around Butterfield en route to the plate.

Hanigan isn’t the fastest runner in the world, but he was quick enough Monday to slide in just ahead of Ryan Lavarnway’s tag. It’s just a good thing Butterfield didn’t block Hanigan’s path to the plate, or else the popular coach known as “Butter” might have gotten trampled for the sake of an extra run.
