The international break couldn’t disrupt Wayne Rooney’s natural, goal-scoring rhythm … against Aston Villa, that is.

Rooney scored a spectacular goal in for Manchester United on Saturday in its 3-1 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League. Rooney’s goal sealed Manchester United’s victory, which moved it past Manchester City (at least temporarily) into third place in the Premier League standings with just seven games remaining in the 2014-15 season.

Manchester United led 1-0 but was laboring to kill off Aston Villa in the 79th minute when Rooney seized the day and did what he does better than any other player. Angel di Maria crossed into Aston Villa’s penalty area for Rooney, who controlled the ball with his left foot, swiveled and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

The goal was Rooney’s 12th in the Premier League and 14th in all competitions this season. Six players have scored more league goals than Rooney this term, but he is the only one with a worthy claim of being Aston Villa’s true nemesis.

Rooney, 29, also continues to climb the Premier League’s list of all-time leading goal scorers.

Manchester United now has won five straight league games. Rooney has scored four goals in that span, showing he thrives when playing as a center forward instead of in the midfield where manager Louis van Gaal deployed him for much of the season.
