Here’s a word of advice for anyone who’s considering publicly firing one of their employees: Make sure they know before the media starts releasing the news.

ESPN announced Friday that writer and contributor Bill Simmons would be leaving the network once his contract expires in September after the two sides failed to reach and agreement on a new one. The New York Times’ Richard Sandomir broke the news on Twitter. Apparently, he broke the news to Simmons, too.

ESPN president John Skipper confirmed as much to The Hollywood Reporter.
