Cesc Fabregas started his summer vacation early and ended his chances of making history with one moment of stupidity.

Fabregas was sent off in the first half of Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to West Brom on Monday. The Chelsea midfielder’s offense was successfully kicking the ball at opponent Chris Brunt’s head in plain view of nearly everyone at the Hawthorns.

Fabregas inserted himself into an altercation between the referee, a couple of his teammates and a few West Brom players when he launched the round projectile into the fray in the 29th minute. Fabregas’ strike on Brunt shifted the referee’s focus away from Diego Costa and onto the misbehaving Chelsea midfielder, whom referee quickly dismissed.

Here’s another angle.

England’s Football Association could ban Fabregas for Chelsea’s last game of the 2014-15 season, the 2015 FA Community Shield and the Blues’ first Premier League contest in 2015-16.

Fabregas now has no chance of breaking Thierry Henry’s record for most assists in a single Premier League season.

Fabregas, 28, hadn’t been sent off in almost a decade.

To make matters worse, Brunt laughed both loudest and last. The West Brom midfielder scored his team’s third goal in the comprehensive win over the newly crowned Premier League champions.
