Ben Moser knew who he would be escorting to prom since elementary school.

The junior, who is also the quarterback of  the football team at Susquehanna Township High School in Harrisburg, Penn., made a promise to his mom when he was in fourth grade to take his friend Mary Lapkowicz to the big dance. Mary has Down Syndrome, and according to a touching story from The Patriot-News, the two have always shared a special friendship.

“He watched over her constantly,” their fourth grade teacher Tracey Spogli told The Patriot-News recently. “If she was looking like she wasn’t having fun, he would go over and talk to her. He would pull her in to whatever activity they were doing. He just always watched out for her.”

That bond continued even after the two went their separate ways and attended rival high schools. The pair reconnected when their two schools played each other last year, though, and Moser was quick to remember his fourth-grade vow. Moser gathered some balloons, wrote “prom” on them and presented them to Lapkowicz, who happily agreed to go with her old pal.

The sweet promise came to fruition Friday, as the two attended prom at Lapkowicz’s school, Central Dauphin High School, with their fourth-grade teacher even making an appearance at their prom pictures.

“He has grown into a man with a big heart, a deep sense of putting others first, and most of all making people feel special and loved,” Ben’s mom Lisa Moser shared on Facebook. “Today with joyful tears in my eyes and down my face I watched a promise made, 7 years ago, to a beautiful girl fulfilled.”
