The NBA has a subtle message for the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets: You’ve got a long way to go.
Three of the four teams in their respective conference finals didn’t make the cut in the league’s newest commercial promoting the upcoming NBA Finals, which showcases a handful of the greatest teams in NBA history. The Rockets did, but only as the losing team — or rather, as Larry Bird’s helpless victim in Game 1 of the 1981 NBA Finals.
Larry Legend wasn’t the only Celtic in the video, though. Despite Boston’s early exit this postseason at the hands of the Cavaliers, footage from at least six of the Celtics’ NBA-record 17 championships is included throughout the minute-long commercial, which is narrated by rapper/actor Common.
Bob Cousy dribbling out the clock in 1962, Kevin Garnett’s iconic “Anything’s possible” moment, and several clips from the Bird-Kevin McHale-Robert Parish “Big Three” Era are included.
