The Devin Gardner experiment is over before it really began.

The Patriots released Gardner, who played quarterback at Michigan but was transitioning to wide receiver in the NFL, the team announced Monday.

The Patriots also released cornerback Chimdi Chekwa and linebacker Cameron Gordon, and they signed linebacker Brandon Spikes.

The Patriots now have two open spots on their 90-man roster as organized team activities are set to begin later this month.

Gardner was signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2015 NFL Draft. The Chekwa, Gordon and Spikes transactions previously were reported.
