The Rock Says Deflategate Shouldn’t Matter, Cites Former Miami Coach

Everyone from Milan Lucic to Barack Obama has offered their opinions on Deflategate. So it was only a matter of time before The Rock weighed in.

Dwayne Johnson doesn’t have any connections to the NFL, but he did play defensive line at the University of Miami before going on to WWE superstardom. So when the football player-turned-wrestler-turned-actor sat down for an interview with Sports Illustrated, he had little problem offering his take on a scandal that resulted in a stiff penalty for the New England Patriots.

“I had a coach, his name was Ed Orgeron, and he was our defensive line coach at the University of Miami,” Johnson told SI.com. “He’s a phenomenal coach and crazy as all hell. His sentiment to something like this is how we feel as defensive players.

“We were raised in an environment at the University of Miami where Ed would say, ‘We don’t give a (expletive).’ You go after the quarterback the exact same way. You pin your ears back and get after it. And if the quarterback is able to get the ball off, then it’s your fault.”

The Rock also dished on Wrestlemania 32 and looked back at some fond memories from his WWE days, but his decision to (kind of) side with Tom Brady and the Patriots has drawn the most interest.

Judging by the reactions of several NFL players — including those on the defensive side of the ball — it appears Johnson’s opinion is in the minority. But at least the opinion is out there.
