Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts exited Thursday’s game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park with a left forearm contusion, the club announced.

Rangers starter Nick Martinez hit Bogaerts with a pitch on the left forearm in the second inning. Bogaerts initially remained in the game, but Carlos Peguero pinch-hit for the 22-year-old in the fourth inning.

Peguero, making his Red Sox debut, stayed in the game following the at-bat and played left field while Brock Holt shifted to shortstop. Bogaerts didn’t show any ill effects of his injury while fielding a popup in the third inning, but it clearly became an issue after the routine play.

Bogaerts spiked both his bat and his helmet upon being struck by Martinez’s 91-mph fastball. He was in obvious pain, so it was relatively unsurprising to see him exit the contest two innings later.
