Matt Chatham Explains How NFL Players Use Media To Negotiate Contracts

The media isn’t always a bad thing for players.

San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant both find themselves in the midst of contract disputes with their respective teams, with their battles now being fought in part through the media. Former NFL linebacker Matt Chatham points out in his latest post for Football by Football that can be incredibly beneficial for players, though, as it helps them gain leverage in myriad ways.

While it can help players get fans on their side, it also gives them the opportunity to become a distraction for the team — so much so that their teammates and coaches start rallying for them.

“Overall, negotiating through the media is one of the few advantages a player has in contract negotiations,” Chatham wrote. “While the player tries to get the fans to empathize with his cause, it’s really just one of those roll-the-dice situations. Trying to get your coaches and teammates on your side is more likely because their interests are tied to that player’s.”
