The Boston Red Sox will pick seventh in the 2015 Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

That’s a bad thing for the Red Sox, because it’s a product of their failed 2014 season. However, it could be a positive in the long run, because several impact players have been selected at No. 7 overall in the past.

The Red Sox also picked seventh in 2013 — a result of their miserable 2012 season under Bobby Valentine — and selected left-handed pitcher Trey Ball. The jury obviously is still out on that selection, as Ball turns just 21 years old this month and hasn’t played above High-A, but he certainly has upside.

Drafting in baseball is difficult. It’s such an extensive process and superstars can come from all over, especially with the international market booming. The Red Sox have an excellent chance to nab a franchise-altering player at No. 7, though. The pick shouldn’t be taken lightly.

The 2015 draft kicks off Monday. To hold everyone over, let’s look at the best players to ever be selected in the Red Sox’s first-round spot — No. 7 overall.
