UPDATE (12:28 a.m. ET): Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Miami Marlins with a broken hand and, according to The Associated Press, will meet with a hand specialist. He’s expected to be out four to six weeks.
ORIGINAL STORY: Baseball fans won’t be able to appreciate Giancarlo Stanton’s mammoth home runs for another four to six weeks.
The Miami Marlins slugger has a broken left hand, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal first reported Saturday, one day after Stanton felt some discomfort after he said “my bat dug into my hand a little bit” on a swing.
“It’s on my hand where I grip the bat, where it rotates in my hand,” Stanton said Friday night. “That’s where it was.”
CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported Stanton has a broken hamate bone in the hand, and Marlins.com’s Joe Frisaro said the team doesn’t believe there’s any ligament damage, hence the four- to six-week timeline for a return. Stanton will need surgery, according to Frisaro.
Stanton entered Saturday leading the National League in homers (27) and RBIs (67), and was considered a shoo-in for the National League All-Star team. This injury will prevent him from playing in the game July 14 in Cincinnati.
