Triple Crown near miss War EmblemThe Belmont Stakes takes place Saturday, and for the second year in a row, there’s a Triple Crown hopeful in the field.

American Pharoah will be looking to become the 12th horse to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes and the first since Affirmed in 1978. California Chrome had the chance in last year’s race, but finished short in a tie for fourth place.

But what American Pharoah’s owners certainly don’t want is for his name to be added to the longer list of horses who have won the first two races and lost at Belmont Park. Thirteen horses have done so since Affirmed, and nine have been near misses over just the last 20 years.

So from Silver Charm to I’ll Have Another, here’s the list American Pharoah doesn’t want to appear on come Saturday.
